A spellbinding fairytale adventure comes to Theatre Porto – Baba Yaga

Get ready for a magical journey into the heart of Slavic folklore as Theatre Hullabaloo and Theatre Porto proudly presents “Baba Yaga” a contemporary fairytale adventure for audiences aged 6 and above.

This spellbinding production will run from October 6th to October 12th, 2023 at Theatre Porto and public tickets are ON SALE NOW!

A Modern Twist on a Timeless Tale

Inspired by the Slavic stories of Baba Yaga, the enchanting tale of a sister and brother who are forced to flee their home, only to find themselves in a whole new world – A New-Place. But is this new place really safe? Hush! Just beyond, in a chicken-leg house, lurks the most dangerous of adversaries – Baba Yaga herself. She’s the lip-smacking, chiddler-nicking, fear-smelling witch of legends, and she’s ready to make your heart race.

A Celebration of Children’s Bravery

This dark new fairytale takes unexpected twists and turns, where danger hides in the least expected corners, but safety is closer than you think. With fantastical fairytale ingredients, physical theatre, and an epic score, this production celebrates the bravery of children, reminding us all that courage and ingenuity can triumph even in the face of the most formidable adversaries.

A Collaboration of Creativity

“Baba Yaga” is the result of a collaborative effort between Theatre Hullabaloo and Theatre Porto, developed through conversations with children and families who share a fascination with this ultimate witch. Laura Lindow’s brilliant new play reimagines the best elements of these stories, creating a dark, fairytale world where children’s bravery and ingenuity ultimately triumph.

Critical Acclaim

Critics are already raving about “Baba Yaga”:

  • “Brilliant production for the whole family to enjoy together…” – Family Explorers North East
  • “Total genius. We loved the show so much that we forgot to breathe!” – Audience Member, April 2022

Educational and Culturally Enriching

“Baba Yaga” is more than just a theatrical experience; it’s an educational journey. In our version, audiences will take a captivating journey with 10-year-old twins as they embark on an adventure to seek safety. Along the way, they’ll be forced to show great resilience and courage to defeat the ultimate witch. This original show will support pupils’ appreciation of common themes and conventions across a range of writing, including traditional tales. It also celebrates the diverse heritage of pupils from Eastern European backgrounds.
