Call for freelance Community Artists
We are seeking passionate and creative Community Artists to join our pool of freelance practitioners for new projects, which includes working with 1) refugee families and 2) secondary school age young people in Ellesmere Port.
About Theatre Porto
Theatre Porto is a specialist theatre company ‘for, by and with’ children and young people based in Ellesmere Port. Formerly known as Action Transport Theatre, we focus on creating high-quality, accessible performances and participatory projects for children, young people, and families.
Theatre Porto is known for its bold, collaborative approach, often working with local schools, community groups, and artists, to make new work, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity. Our programme delivered at our new venue and our work in the community, plays a pivotal role in the cultural life of Ellesmere Port, offering a space for creativity, learning, and artistic exploration.
What We’re Looking For:
- Experienced artists who have led collaborative, participatory arts projects
- Ability to engage teenage young people and/or refugee families in inclusive, empowering arts-led, creative work
- Passion for working in Ellesmere Port, utilizing local spaces, establishing new activity in ways that connect with the unique character of the area
- Experience in different art forms (visual arts, music, drama, photography, digital arts, etc.)
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and lead creative workshops and artistic sessions, fostering self-expression and community building
- Work collaboratively with participants, including young people and refugee families, ensuring activities are accessible and meaningful
- Promote cultural exchange and celebrate diversity through art
- Engage with local community settings, including schools, libraries and community spaces
Requirements:
- Proven experience as a professional artist working in community settings
- Proven experience of working with children and young people
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Understanding of the needs of diverse groups, including refugee families
- Availability for project-based work in Ellesmere Port
- An enhanced DBS Check will be required if not already in place
- Own transport will be useful
Rates of Pay:
£25/£28.50 per hour is our average hourly rate for freelance artists. All fees will be negotiated per contract.
